The Beaufort Inn
My wife Deb was born and raised in Beaufort so it was an easy decision to move "back" to Beaufort after living on Hilton Head for many years. We were looking to start another business so when Deb happened to have jury duty in Beaufort one week I suggested she look around Beaufort for an old building downtown that we could restore into an Inn.
Well she came back with a property on Port Republic Street which is just one block off the main street downtown that was a defunct project and an abandoned attempt at a restoration for an inn and restaurant. It was an old home that was once The Beaufort Inn, originally built as a home in 1895 and operated as a boarding house during the 40's.
The building had been worked on extensively but it was basically a shell with no doors in place, not interior trim or finishes, no steps on the interior or exterior were completed and the grounds were overgrown with weeds and encroaching trees. It looked like a major project to most and it was. But it also looked like a challenge and an opportunity to me.
We ended up buying the property and getting our plans together for the construction so we could begin work early that January. We opened to a full house and it was quite an experience. Over the next few years we built the property into a Four Diamond Inn and Restaurant.
We operated and expanded the Inn and restaurant for seven years before selling the property in 2000 and moving on to real estate.
It was a great accomplishment and we are proud to have contributed an important landmark to the City Of Beaufort. If you have not had a chance to stay or dine at the Inn your missing out. Check out their website here Beaufort Inn. And be sure to tell them Deb and Russ sent you.
