Located in the heart of Beaufort's Historic District this home was built in the 1830's. This 3 story, 4 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath historic home was constructed in the Federal style with emergent Greek Revival details. It was constructed for Dr. Joseph Hazel, a successful Sea Island cotton planter on St. Helena Island. During the Civil War the home served as a hospital for the Union Army's 54th Massachusetts Regiment. In 1969 the home was added to the National Historic District Register. With a large living room and formal dining room the home was restored in 1994 and due to its lofty elevation, it fills with light, illuminating original heart pine flooring, millwork, windows and fireplaces. Lustrous new wooden kitchen counters were added which added to the space's utilitarian function.
